Wednesday, November 07, 2007 Team CDO may enter in ‘five’ POF events By Lynde Salgados
THERE'S a little hope left for Team CDO to be able to join the 2nd Philippine Olympic Festival set November 12-14 at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Metro Manila.
If the budget is approved, Cagayan de Oro will reportedly settle to participate in at least five of a dozen sports disciplines being lined up in the four-day meet.
"Until now, wait and see pa ang tanan kon ma-aproban ba ang budget sa lima ka napili nga events nga atong apilan. Basta ang gi-suggest sa among meeting nga hatagan og tag P300 per day nga allowance sa kaon matag atleta," Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon, one of the leading trainers of the city's Asset in sports program, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Cuizon cited taekwondo, swimming, chess, table tennis and basketball as the possible events Team CDO may enter in the national qualifying games for the country's future training pool members.
This, as the local sports buffs remain unsure as to whom of the City Hall insiders they're going to consult or ask for on matters regarding "sports development?" even as the names of Erwin Culanag, Jigs Jaraula, Nonong Roa, Lawrence Pastrano and Lito Rivera were among those floated as Mayor Tinnex Jaraula's "sports facilitators" in as far as the POF campaign is concerned.
Meanwhile, Misor press head Maricel Casi¤o Rivera could not yet relay concrete details about the province's plans for its qualified athletes in the POF Games.
"Lyn, chek sa nako ha kung unsay plano dire," Governor Oscar Moreno's reliable confidant texted this writer in reply to a similar query.
Misamis Oriental province had successfully hosted the POF's regional qualifying games here at the Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center. But whether it could send all of Misor's own qualifiers to the national POF championships in Manila is a thing that's still remain to be seen.
"Sa mga programa sa gobiyerno ilabi na sa sports mabentahaan gyod `ta kay sa financial aspect gihapon magdaug kon ang finals didto ipahigayon sa kaulohan. Ang kasagaran mahitabo apil `ta sa local eliminations pero sa finals bahala na or pasuwertihay na lang kon ma-budgetan ba pag-adto ang mga talents sa Mindanao," one grizzled sports afficionado best summed up the glaring Philippine sports scenario.
