A MEMBER of Cagayan de Oro City council claims that certain police officials are protecting the illegal gambling operations in the city.
Councilor Roger Abaday said the gambling underworld has remained active because some officials within the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) are protecting its financiers.
The councilor, who is a criminology dean in one of the universities here, did not name names.
According to Abaday, the police officers do not only protect gambling lords, but they also profit from various illegal activities, such as the proliferation of illegal slot machines and video karera.
Abaday is a member of the City Council police committee, which is conducting an investigation on the matter.
The Regional Police Office in Northern Mindanao will conduct a parallel probe on the allegations, he added.
Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya had earlier challenged Acting City Police Director Isagani Genabe to act on the reports, while Police Superintendent Genabe, who assumed office just last month, was summoned into the committee's investigation Wednesday.
