Wednesday, February 27, 2008 To show outrage, beep your horn: students By Annabelle L. Ricalde
PASSING motorists beeped their horns as students from Xavier University urged them to do so in the name of truth Tuesday amid the celebration of Edsa I.
Students from Xavier University went out of the school's gate and staged a 30-minute barrage urging motorists to beep their horns in response to the controversial National Broadband Network (NBN)-ZTE deal.
Waving placards, the students called on drivers of passing cars and jeepneys to beep their horn to show their outrage.
Many of the drivers responded that they did not just honk once, but many times -- a sign of the public's growing indignation of the involvement of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her family to the NBN-ZTE deal.
The protest action is unprecedented. Students from Xavier University did it in 2001 when the nation clamored for the resignation of the former President Joseph Estrada.
This time, however, the target of the outrage is Estrada's successor, President Arroyo.
"We are calling all Kagay-anons to actively engage in the pursuit of truth and justice," said Nestor Banuag Jr., assistant director of Kristohanong Katilingban Pagpakabana (KKP), an XU student group.
Banuag said they would stage a noise barrage every afternoon until Friday when they will hold a mass to be celebrated by Fr. Jett Villarin, University president, at the XU chapel at 12 noon.
