Tuesday, March 04, 2008 Ex-Oro broadcaster wins NY singing stint
NEW YORK CITY -- A former broadcaster from Cagayan de Oro City was one of the three contestants who won in the Western Union Singing competition held at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Consulate (5th Avenue, NY) over the weekend where 12 professional singers competed in a singing competition sponsored by Western Union.
Rey Yanez garnered first place (Part I) of the competition and landed third (Part II). Contestants were judged based on quality of voice, stage performance (50 percent), and applause by supporters (50 percent).
Officers, members and "adopted" Kagayanons and Misamisnons were there to support Yanez who was one time employed by Bombo Radyo and RMN in Cagayan de Oro City.
His former radio colleagues who had also migrated to New York in the late 1990s - Claire and Dolly Ilogon - as well as former Cagayan de Oro-based newspaper publisher Boy Guillena were there to give Yanez their support.
Top officers of Western Union were impressed on how the group came very organized and prepared that they waved yellow papers marked "MABUHAY CDO-MIS. OR. - WESTERN UNION!
They said they are willing to help the computer literacy program for needy children as well as support other projects of the Association.
All those who were there came home very happy and fulfilled. (Press release)
