3 arrested over gang-rape raps

TWO teams of policemen arrested Wednesday three of the six suspects who allegedly gang-raped a 24-year-old married woman in Cagayan de Oro.

Police identified the suspects as 21 year olds Ernie Lumbab and Rafael Baguio, and 24 year old Amir Magad.

The three, who are connected with Transpecial Trucking Service located at Corrales Extension, were caught by joint elements of Agora and Macabalan police precincts at their workplace.

Of the three, only Lumbab confessed taking part in raping Mikaela (not her real name), while Baguio and Magad denied involvement in the crime. The three other suspects remain at large.

Mikaela, a resident of Piaping Itum, Macabalan, positively identified Lumbab as one those who abused her.

In an interview with Sun,Star, she said that prior to the incident she was attending a wake at her friend's house in neighboring Barangay Lapasan.

"Samtang nagbaklay ko diha sa Corrales dunay babaye nanawag sa akoa, abi nako akong amiga pero pagduol nako di ko man diay kaila," Mikaela said. (While walking along Corrales a girl called me and, thinking I knew her, approached her but it turned out that she was a stranger).

When she turned to leave, Mikaela said the suspects-who were then drinking at the store near their workplace-stopped her and offered her a drink, which she took.

But she was surprised that after having three shots, she felt dizzy and tired.

She said the suspects then forced her to lie down and started raping her in an area close to the suspects' workplace. She wanted to shout for help but the six threatened to kill her, she said.

Roving ronda tanod of Barangay Lapasan later found her along the junction of Corrales-Gaabucayan streets wandering, and brought her to the police station in Agora.

Probers said they are considering in calling the security guard of the suspect's workplace to shed light on the incident.

Markaela said her husband had just left their house due to frequent disagreements. The situation between her and her husband is the reason why her mind was not stable that time. She said she has one child under her care.

Police Inspector Jerwin Boyoro, Macabalan police chief, said rape charges are being readied against the suspects. Under Philippine laws, rape is punishable with a sentence of being imprisoned for prison. (Joey P. Nacalaban)
