Parochial barangay concerns addressed

COUNCILOR Aaron Neri expressed his full support to the implementation of the septage management ordinance of Barangay 11, saying this should be replicated in other barangays.

At the meeting of the City Council committee on barangay affairs, barangay representatives explained that the ordinance will require three instead of two septic tanks for the liquid and solid wastes in households and commercial areas.

The third compartment will serve as the filter of the wastes to prevent any contamination when these are drained in canals and sewages.

According to the barangay officials, this is the same system being implemented in other cities like Dumaguete and is meant to protect the environment.

Neri lauded the barangay for coming up with the ordinance and said he will recommend this same measure to other barangays.

The committee referred the barangay ordinance to the laws and rules committee chaired by Councilor Ramon Tabor for approval.

In a related development, the City Council committee on public works chaired by Councilor Emmanuel Abejuela tasked City Engineer Jorie Bingona to look into the concerns of the barangay council of Lumbia.

During its recent meeting, Lumbia barangay chair Wilhelm Valencia requested for the preparation of the technical plan for the installation of an integrated drainage and road system of the barangay.

The barangay official explained that the document is always being asked by subdivision developers in the area even as he stressed that the integrated drainage is necessary for the fast development of the barangay.

Meanwhile, Valencia reported to the committee that there are already houses in the barangay encroaching the road right of way.

The official asked City Hall to help them in stopping the owners from further constructing extensions of their houses.

Abejuela advised Valencia to submit a written report with the names of owners for the committee to verify during its next meeting. (Press release)
