Top importers disclosed
THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) in Northern Mindanao has recognized the top 30 importers of the region who made use of their services and contributed to its becoming a "billionaire" district last year.
These importers paid the government a total of P2.445 billion or 92 percent of the total annual collection of which P1.146 billion accounted for custom duties, P1.283 billion for value added taxes (VAT) and P8.992 million for excise taxes.

The actual collection of BOC in 2007 amounted to P2.631 billion, up by P743.328 million or 39.37 percent over its collection of P1.888 billion in 2006, and increased by P288.161 million or 12.30 percent compared to its target for the year of P2.343 billion.
"In terms of volume, these importers brought in products that reached a total of 1,301,637,094 kg. which is valued at P18,134,106,882," Abedin P. Macapasir, BOC district collector, said.
Marvin Mison, deputy collector of BOC in the said region, meantime said that Nestle Philippines Inc., whose payment for customs duties as well as VAT and excise taxes amounted to P908.797 million, topped the list of these importers.
Nestle was followed by Steag Power Plant with P786.650 million; Jetti Supply Distributor Inc., P115.803 million; Pilmico Foods Corp., P107.803 million; and Del Monte Philippines Inc., P96.111 million; Petronas Energy Philippines Inc., P88.392 million; R.I. Chemical Corp., P79.989 million, Global Steels Philippines Inc., P58.215 million; Pilipinas Shell Corp., P33.194 million; Holcim Philippines Inc., P30.426 million; and Lim Ket Kai Manufacturing Corp., P22.572 million, among others.
