INDICATING that sports development is back -- alive and kicking -- in Cagayan de Oro, all athletes and coaches who made Team CDO proud in the last POF elimination games in Tubod, Lanao del Norte were able to receive each P1,000 cash incentives from the city coffer.
"In behalf of City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula, we do believe that recognizing the achievement of our local athletes will further inspire them to do better on the battle fields," said Rogelio "Jigs" Jaraula, Secretary to the Mayor's, who even went to the extent of assisting the POF achievers in claiming their cash bonuses.
Engineer Isidro Borja, acting city sports coordinator, said cash incentives are also due for homeground athletes who will excel in high-level competitions such as the national and international events.
From Barangay Bonbon to FEU Tamaraws
CITY High graduate Antonio Chavez Jr. grabbed the opportunity to hone his chess talent in Manila by accepting a scholarship grant from Far Eastern University.
Now officially enrolled as first year college, taking Education majoring in Math, the 17-year-old Chavez of Barangay Bonbon, Cagayan de Oro will don the FEU Tamaraw uniform in this year's UAAP Games.
With fellow Cagayanon Christian Arroyo on board one and Lyndon Sombilon on the second board, Chavez will play board 3 for FEU Tamaraws anchored by the likes of Sheider Nebato of General Santos City, John Ranel Morazo of Cavite and James Bulicatin of Davao City.
Now under the tutelage of Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, Chavez bowed not just to enhance his chess career but also to gain success in his academic pursuit. (LLS)
