A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and the ceremonial turnover of initial information and communication technology (ICT) equipment was held recently at the Mayor's Office reception hall, highlighting the partnership of the City Government among project partners in the implementation of Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (Gilas) of Ayala Foundation.

"I am very grateful to Gilas for having undertaking this project because we can't afford to go into all of these in bringing up to a higher level the education of our people," Mayor Constantinto G. Jaraula said after leading the MOA signing.

Gilas is a school-based Internet literacy and access project that aims to connect some 35 public high schools of Cagayan de Oro City to the Internet by next year in line with its mission to improve the students' learning in information technology.

It is a multi-sectoral consortium that has brought together and pool resources from various corporations, legislators, schools, local officials, communities and individuals nationwide to support its cause.

With a combined funding of P5,044,000, each recipient-schools will be provided with 10 units of computers, servers, printers, networking peripherals and its accessories, with one-year free Internet use courtesy of Globe.

Other leading signatories of the MOA were Gilas director Mario A. Deriquito of Ayala Foundation's Center for Social Development; Gilas Mindanao senior manager Archie Velasco; OIC-Chief of DepEd's Secondary Schools Rosita A. Cang; and city schools division superintendent Dr. Myrna S. Motoomull.

Dave Acenas, sales officer of Ayala Land 's Alegria Project and Jeffrey O. Tarayao, head of Globe Telecom's Community Relations and Social Responsibility, expressed their commitment of support during the occasion.

Aside from the MOA signing, the event was highlighted by the handover of the Certificates of Donation of the initial computer package to the three high school recipients, namely: Cagayan de Oro National High School-Camaman-an Annex, Lapasan and Balulang. (Press release)
