Tuesday, August 05, 2008 Super Ferry cagers beat Subokin in Nazareth
IT TURNED out that Super Ferry cagers were too good to handle for Subokin's talented veterans.
Super Ferry fashioned out a shocking 97-84 win over Subokin to grab the championship crown in civic division of the recently-held Barangay Nazareth Basketball League.
This, as FYC--topbilled by the so-called Lapasan "Doggy" Boys--overwhelmed LMDC to rule the junior division.
Bryan Gayramara and Richie Daitol played a key role at the backcourt to inspire SF dribblers from playing a cohesive game on both ends of the floor, though it was Eunice "Tata" Bajao who wrecked havoc on Subokin's defense when he erupted for 34 points.
"Pressure defense and fast ball movement," said 3-point specialist Gali Garcia of their main strategy that took the starch out from Subokin, last summer's civic champion over at Barangay 24.
"Our big men also managed to control the boards," referring to the hard-working troika of Rex Armojillas, "Parepare" Geralde and Boboy Quirante who eventually overshadowed the tandem of Erwin Raagas and Boboy Sabal in the shaded lanes.
Making up for the absence of Governor Oscar S. Moreno and former Claveria Mayor Rocky Calingin, the eldest son of the late Congressman Lagbas, Roldan made his presence felt by dishing off a double figures performance.
"We're just lucky to win the championship. Subokin had only Arvin Martinez as their legitimate pointguard. And of course, Bajao's 34-point production was really great," added Gayramara who contributed 25 points.
Bajao's average of over 20 points per game made him the civic division's Most Valuable Player.
FYC's Celbon Deña took the feat in the junior level. Along with his older brother, Jiji and long-time buddy Jong Vallecera, Deña and company bested LMDC reinforced by their former teammates in "Pering" Celada, Sabunod and Olango.
FYC dribblers brought home the P10,000 top purse.
