Wednesday, August 06, 2008 CDO Medical Center celebrates Mother-Baby week
NORTHERN Mindanao's first private hospital joins the country's health sector in celebrating the Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Week and the World Breastfeeding Week from August 1-7.
An institution polished by time, the Cagayan de Oro Medical Center (COMC) places great emphasis on the health of newborns and their mothers, providing them outstanding child and maternal care in their stay at the hospital.
Consistent with the goal of the Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and the World Breastfeeding Week, it has always been COMC's policy to underscore the importance of breastfeeding to mothers.
The hospital fully implements the 10-steps to successful breastfeeding, which include giving the infant to the mother to breastfeed within the first hour of birth, the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and referring mothers to them on discharge from the hospital to ensure exclusive breastfeeding up to six months and continued breastfeeding up to two years and beyond.
"The hospital is a strong advocate for breastfeeding, always making it a point to educate mothers on the superiority of a mother's milk compared to any high-formula varieties in the market," said Dr. Evelyn Estorba, one of COMC's full-time pediatricians.
The hospital is also staffed with competent maternal-fetal medicine specialists and neonatologists-specialized physicians who take care of the health problems of newborns.
For toddlers and children of all ages, COMC has a range of medical professionals specializing in children's diseases.
"We are a child-friendly hospital. I believe we have good doctors who are good in children's medicine," said Dr. Regina-Mercado, a pediatrician specializing in children's pulmonary diseases. (Press release)
