Wednesday, August 13, 2008 Miss Kagay-an 2008 candidate Rexza Tagaloguin By Mark D. Francisco Lifestyle Editor
REXZA Tagaloguin, 24, is the most hesitant to join of the Miss Kagay-an 2008 candidates.
A member of the screening committee during the go-see, Department of Tourism (DOT) Northern Mindanao Director Butch Chan, even had to tell her to learn how to walk properly so she could be among the lucky 15 ladies.
Zhang (as she's fondly known by chums) once said in her Friendster account, "If high heels were so wonderful, men would be wearing them."
But never underestimate this maiden for beyond the mahinhin demeanor is someone who has a strong conviction.
On the church's attempt to derail and eventually toss out the controversial Reproductive Health Bill, Zhang has this to say: "The Church has nothing to do with these medical practices. We're already a populated country in Asia and I think this might help to balance our population growth and development."
When Pope Benedict XVI spoke before the world's youth in Australia recently regarding a spiritual desert among young people, Zhang said: "I never thought of Pope Benedict XVI to be this judgmental towards our youth. I guess not all of our youth today are engaged in immorality. As a woman and a role model, let us not define what is the desert experience of our soul. I myself can't encourage young women alone. If ever I'll be crowned Miss Kagay-an 2008, I'll be needing their parents' assistance/guidance and as well as our government. I would like to have an educational/human sexuality program intended only for women so they'll be able to understand how fragile and valuable a woman is in this world."
But Zhang is not liberated; on the contrary she is conservative. When it comes to virginity, she has this to say, "If it'll be a fad here in our country, I would like to be the very first woman to wear the so-called purity/chastity ring. Only then I'll take it off if I already have the man of my dreams and be married to him. "
Whew...pretty heavy stuff!
Indeed, this HRM student from Lourdes College is highly intellectual in her choice of books, movies, and television shows.
The list is impressive - Zahir by Paulo Coelho, Disturbia, Top Gun, Memoirs of A Geisha, Dying Young, Sunshine, Oprah, One Tree Hill and The Tyra Banks Show.
By the way, Zhang's dad is Irish-Japanese while her mom is Filipina-Spanish so expect her to be an open-minded person as well.
