Saturday, October 04, 2008 City Hall backs conversion of MPSC into university
CAGAYAN de Oro Mayor Constantino Jaraula threw Friday his all-out support to the proposed legislation converting the Mindanao Polytechnic State College (MPSC) into Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST).
The statement of support was declared by Mayor Jaraula during the public hearing of the Senate Committee on Education presided by Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri held Friday morning at the MPSC Gymnasium.
The public hearing primarily tackled on the proposed Senate Bill 2648 authored by Senator Zubiri, supporting House Bill 4407 principally fathered by Cagayan de Oro Second District Representative Rufus B. Rodriguez for the conversion of the city's only state college into a university.
Jaraula emphasized that the conversion of the MPSC into a university is timely, noting that the region's present direction of development is gearing towards in the field of science and technology.
"The development of Northern Mindanao is towards science and technology. The industrialization of Mindanao started from Northern Mindanao and therefore, Mindanao University of Science and Technology is not merely necessary, but it is imperative for the development of Mindanao and the country," the mayor pointed out.
Jaraula expressed optimism that the conversion of the MPSC into a university will definitely raise the school's level of excellence in the field of arts and sciences, engineering and education, science and technology, among others.
"In the name of the leadership of Cagayan de Oro City, we are very strongly recommending the immediate approval of this Bill," Jaraula declared as he lauded the principal authors and prime movers of the proposed law. (Press Release)
