IT IS always a joy to see kababayans who are working abroad holding key positions in their jobs. When we were in Hong Kong early this month we met Sonny Ang who is director of marketing of Holiday Inn Golden Mile. Just in case you didn’t know, Holiday Inn Golden Mile is one of the leading hotels in Hong Kong, located right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui’s Nathan Road (known as the “golden mile.”), the number one shopping area in Kowloon. The super efficient and hardworking Sonny began his hotel career in Manila but he is now very much at home in Hong Kong.

Though now permanently based in San Francisco, California, Amparito Borromeo Guilatco comes home to Cebu regularly. Her last visit (with daughter Gina, a speech therapist who teaches in Brent School in Metro Manila) was timed for the golden wedding anniversary of her brod Ben and sis-in-law Flora. An indefatigable civic worker, Amparito is involved in many projects in her community.

When Shangri-La communications manager Neil Rumbaoa asked us for dinner at Paparazzi, it was to introduce Paparazzi chef Angelo Faoro who eagerly gave us a taste of his Italian specialties. Angelo is not only an excellent chef (he has been named the hotel’s sous chef), he is an entertaining conversationalist as well. We loved his seafood risotto and his fish (salmon and sole) entrees....plus his amusing anecdotes of life in the USA. Looking in to say “hi” was German executive chef Stefan Mueller.

That same evening we had a brief chat with GM Ben Bousnina who says he will be saying goodbye to Cebu soon. Having drinks with him at the Lobby Lounge was visiting colleague Desmond Hatton, GM of Rasa Ria Shangri-La in Kota Kinabalu.

Isabel “Inday” Almario Romero has always been in the business of exporting Philippine handicrafts but lately she has concentrated on the manufacture of rosaries. Her rosaries are unique because they have the three complete mysteries inscribed in triangular bars between each decade. It makes for a perfect gift because each one comes in a capiz shell box with a crocheted case inside plus a compact little prayer book. Without doubt, Inday’s company, Mark and Mitch Treasures is a class all its own. Call her at 233-4498 for orders or visit her at 321-B Acacia st. in Lahug to get a good look at her beautiful rosaries.
