The search for the perfect beermatch By Myke Sarthou
Drinking is one thing. Hanging out and having a good time is another. Where the one calls only for a bottle of beer and a simple wooden stool or bench to complete the act, the other requires ambiance and tasty, even exotic food.
As beer-drinkers and food-lovers, we‘ve come a long way from old reliables like kropeck, a can of corned beef, the occasional canine, or even the “walang kamatayang” bowl of peanuts. We‘ve developed a taste for more exotic and appetizing dishes to go with our favorite bottle of brew. Our search for that perfect beer match has intensified. And around the metropolis, the only hindrance to finding the right beer match is too much beer.
Take Wah for example. People who frequent this unassuming by-the-road resto will only have two words to say about their perfect beer match: ngohiong and sizzling tuna. I don’t know what they put into their deep-fried Chinese rolls, but it’s more filling and delicious than most ngohiong varieties served in other places. Served on a hotplate, the aroma of their sizzling tuna is more than enough to make a believer out of any customer.
Mi Vida at the Ayala Entertain-ment Center, and Cue Café and the Vudu at the Crossroads in Banilad also have aces up their sleeves. Mi Vida’s crispy tortilla chips is served with three different dips: salsa, cheese, and an onion and tomato dip. Cue Café’s pizza with chorizo bits is an unusual but tasty treat as well. Vudu’s Assorted Cold Cuts and Cheese Platter is another beer great match. It requires no more introduction—just take that short trip down there and be bewitched.
Jukebox Resto-bar at the Grand Convention Center is another great choice for beer-loving folk with an appetite for good food. Take your pick from the choice of pica-picas on this page. And yes, they serve small bowls of peanuts.
