CEBU City sent all its remaining boxers to the finals after yesterday’s drizzle-interrupted semifinals of the 2002 National Youth Open Amateur Boxing Championship at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Bago City sprung a surprise yesterday when it sent five of its 13 fighters to the finals, while Mandaue City, which had the most number of semifinalists at nine, suffered a major setback when only four boxers managed to pull off wins.
Today’s championship matches will be held at the Ayala Entertainment Center starting at 3 p.m.
Candijay-native Reynaldo Bautista of the Alona Tropical Resort Team from Pangalao, Bohol, surprised everyone when he again scored a big upset stoppage over the highly favored Peter John Artos of Tulunan, Cotabato Province in the 51-kilogram division semis.
Bautista, who earlier upset Cebu City’s Nicolas Banal in the quarterfinals, secured his place in the finals with an impressive with Referee Stopped Contest-Head-Blows (RSC-H) decisions in just 36 seconds of the first round.
Cagayan de Oro City also showed good performance in the Developmental level as it sent two boxers to the finals after disposing of top-caliber opponents.
The Cebu City Niños proved to be a force to reckon with as they lived up to the expectations of their coach Peter Cuizon.
Rocky Fuentes (38kg), Jonard Villanueva (39kg), Roben Miñoza (40kg), Alex John Banal (41kg), Allenyl Codilla (42kg), Robert Allanic (45kg), Caesar Amonsot (57kg) and Alexis Cañamo (60kg) are Cebu City’s finalists today.
Fuentes defeated Epetacio Anacay of Bacolod City (40-26) and will meet Milan Melindo of Cagayan de Oro City, who defeated Jason Tanallon of Cotabato Province 32-28. Villanueva bested Elviro Castillo Jr. of Bacolod City (34-27) and will battle Reynaldo Caitom of Mandaue City, who pulled an RSC-Outclass win over Ramjie Bancongon of Cadiz City.
Miñoza eliminated Ruther del Castillo of Mandaue City (38-32) and will face Tommy Terado of Cotabato Province, winner over Hansel Padernal Jr. of Tulunan, Cotabato Province; Banal was too much for Rey Curativo of Cadiz City following an RSC-H win in 39 seconds of the first round and will have to be extra careful against Johnny Cadigal of Tulunan, Cotabato Province, who also scored an RSC-H in 1:17 of the first over Norman Hilado Jr. of Bacolod City.
Codilla pulled an RSC-Outclassed win in 1:22 of the fourth against Norbert Bandada of Negros Occidental and will vie against Johnny Cadigal of Tulunan, an RSC-O winner over Roel Villas of Mandaue City.
Allanic was quick to dispose of Arneil Bacan of Gingoog City in 29 seconds of the first, and will fight Glen Ventura of Bago City, who scored an upset 41-35 win over Benedict Suico of Mandaue City.
Amonsot also pulled an RSC-O win in 1:47 of the first over Pepito Rapoc of Gingoog City and will be fighting Lexer Bulain Paingco of Camiguin Island, who scored an RSC-H in 1:48 of the first over Rodel Tamba of Bago City.
Cañamo defeated Alkim Naquila of Malaybalay-Bukidnon by RSC-O in 1:34 of the second and will go up against Mark Jason Millegen of Bago City, who won by walkover against Arjim Ebrole of Dumaguete City.
The other winners for Mandaue City were Jomar Matbagon, Jethro Pitogo and Ruel Macario. Matbagon will fight Alberto Yap of Cagayan de Oro, Pitogo will trade fists with Reynan Salimbot of Bago City, and Macario will face Bautista of Alona Tropical Resort.
In the 36kg finals, Archieve Sellado of Cadiz City will fight Fil June Leonardo of Negros Occidental. |
