Bench held back?
By Roger Serna

Before anything else, allow me to welcome to the country Steve and Florinda Pincock who flew to the country from England just last week. Flor hails from Suba, Danao City.

Flor’s siblings, Letty, Nilda, Edgar (and wife Alice), Arthur (and son Jason) and relatives (Mom Priming, Joel, Shirley, Jover, Sandra, Dimple, Lani, Loren, Erwin, Kathy and Ken) share the excitement of this writer. The couple’s children, Simon and Tamara, who are on their school break are spending their vacation with their parents.

Interestingly, though Simon is for years older than Tamara, the two share the same birthdate. They celebrated their natal day last Saturday in Oppra Hills at the residence of Atty. Ecarma and family.

Again, welcome. To Simon and Tamara, happy birthday!

Mixed reactions were expressed after the showing of One Night Only, the overhauled denim and underwear fashion show of Bench recently. Of course, the underwear portion elicited more excitement and raised temperatures and blood pressure levels as well.

The underwear for both sexes came in white, black, red, gray and skin tones.

Wendell Ramos who’s very visible on TV was easily the most applauded. Next to him, came Richard Gomez, Mark Nelson and Assunta de Rossi who was perhaps the only perfect female model that night.

While the male models’ bodies were toned and trim, the same cannot be said of the female models except a few. Aya Medel was a big disappointment as were the other named female celebrities.

For those who didn't see Bench’s previous show staged two years ago, One Night Only was eye-popping and mind-boggling. However, those who saw the first one said it was a better show in terms of concept and ‘shock value.’

Speaking of shock value, we heard and read that the Manila counterpart staged in June was a better one. Some insiders say they had to tone down the Cebu show for various reasons.

Why? Does Bench think Cebuanos are second class spectators and thus deserve less? Why was the show marketed as the same one which the Manilans saw ahead?

These and a few more questions were left unanswered as we trooped out of the venue wondering what Bench would come up with next and would it live up to Cebuanos’ expectations this time, if ever?

BMG Records (Pilipinas) exec Narciso Chan breezed into town last week and exchanged pleasantries with this writer and colleague Troy Ciar over some native dishes. Boss Ciso, as we fondly call him, narrated how the Sexbomb song Bakit Papa?

(the ‘laban-laban, bawi-bawi’ song, in case you still didn’t know, huh!) came on strong in Manila airlanes and sold like hotcakes in record bars.

This writer shared that during the Pintados Kasadyaan Festival in Tacloban late last month, at least two big contingents from two rival computer schools in fact used the song as their unofficial chant (of course, replacing some words with their school’s name) during the parade.

Sexbomb will come up with an album soon, of course, with Bakit Papa? as the carrier single. By the way, if you want to own copies of the Sexbomb’s mini-album composed of three songs with their respective minus-ones, get hold of Sun.Star Super Balita and get the details.

Another show which originated in Manila will be brought to Cebu next month.

Illusione… Encore, touted as a three-part extravaganza featuring Broadway hits will be shown at the SM Theater One in Aug. 9 and 10.

We hope the organizers will give the Cebu crowd what it rightfully deserves and avoid disappointments that some viewers felt at the Bench fashion show. Reminder: the Cebu crowd is still hard to please up to now.
