Cebu bets cop plums
HEAVY favorite KIM Steven Yap and unexpected winner Lloyd Robillos will lead the Cebu leg qualifiers of the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship at the Sacred Heart School for Boys Gym.
Yap, who beat Robillos younger brother Christian in the final round, had a perfect output of seven points in seven round to top the Kiddie division, while Robillos clinched the top spot in the Junior division with 6.5 points.
Yap, whose skills would be good enough for him to be a strong candidate even in the Junior division, was tied by Cagayan de Oro’s Randolp Dalauta at the top spot, but the Cebuano secured the champion’s trophy with a better tiebreak score.
Dalauta defeated fellow Cagayanon and defending champion Boris Diez in the final round. Last year’s runner-up, Denver Ruaya, had 6.5 points to bag the third-place trophy, while Diez fell to joint fourth with a host of other six-pointers. Yap, Dalauta and Ruaya make-up the Cebu leg Kiddie qualifiers.
With the trip to Manila already in sight, Robillos elected a draw in his final-round match against another dark horse entry, Davao City’s Reynaldo Aba-a. Both finished with 6.5 points, but Robillos won first prize with a better tiebreak score.
Melchie Tomias had the highest tiebreak points among the six-pointers to wrest the third spot. Robillos, Aba-a and Tomias will advance to the national finals in Manila.
Meanwhile, four-year-old John Balbona of the Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion received a prize for being the youngest participant in the two-day tourney.
Mark Cuyag was given the Art Borjal Memorial award fro having the biggest score in the 10-Under category, while the Asian Learning School was cited for sending the biggest number of participants at 47.
