Lapulapu film to star Lito Lapid
By Sam Costanilla
SPOTLIGHT

LAPULAPU. I learned that a Manila film company is producing a movie on the life and exploits of Mactan chieftain Lapulapu. Pampanga Gov. Lito Lapid is playing the lead role and Willy Mayo is directing it. I am both glad and sad about this development. Glad because finally, there will be a bioflick – for nationwide showing – on the first Cebuano hero. Sad because for sure this production will be in Tagalog, not Cebuano or Visayan. But then producing the Lapulapu biofilm in Tagalog is the most logical and practical thing for the company to do if it wants a return on its investment, plus a substantial income. We Cebuanos/Visayans have to admit that any film in the dialect can never earn money for its producer even if it features some of the popular Cebuano stars now based in Manila or elsewhere. This is precisely the reason why the local movie industry has stayed dormant.

RESEARCH. But just the same, we Cebuanos should be thankful to this Manila film company for venturing into what is supposed to be a Cebuano production. I understand that the period bioflick is based on extensive research, the result of which has been authenticated and approved by proper government agencies. This also means that those past productions about Lapulapu, including a supposedly city festival on him, were fruits of pure imagination by some self-proclaimed “writers”; and therefore did not tell the real score about the chieftain’s life, love and struggles. The Lapid starrer is one we should not miss once it is shown.

PEOPLE. I am happy to note that the Mandaue city government has commissioned the right people to work on the upcoming Mantawi festival. Its debut staging is on Aug. 30 this year. The festival is actually a historical parade, a moving diorama as well as street dancing that will involve thousands of students and government employes. The working committees are composed of people whose integrity, credibility and industry are beyond question - not like you-know-who whose “swindling” skill is the talk of the town.

LEGISLATOR. This controversial and publicity-hungry local legislator is a known playboy. He has a kid with someone other than his wife. But is it true that he is also a henpecked husband? Ask his wife who happens to be one of his legislative staffers. (For reactions/feedback, call or text 0916-3483333).
