Baring it all

Another name has been added in the growing list of Cebuana starlets who are now into sexy films in Manila. Well, if we had Claudia Zobel in the 80s, and Rita Magdalena and Yda Manzano in the 90s, then brace yourselves for this latest discovery and new contract star of Starlight Films.
She is 19-year-old Nina Lopez of Lapu-Lapu city, who looks every inch perfect material to become big and outdo what her predecessors had achieved. This tall beauty at 5’5” is being introduced in her first movie project, Biglang Liko, where she reveals her killing curves and precious asset to the surprise of her veteran co-stars Halina Perez and Barbara Milano.
Biglang Liko is actually one of two movies which had been Rated X last week by the MTRCB (Movie Television Regulatory and Classification Board) due to some provocative scenes. The other was Diane Lane’s Unfaithful. “But because of our story and artistic value, it was later given R-18,” said Starlight movie producer Kit Pascual.Lopez, together with her talent manager Bing Tongco and Pascual were among those who paid a visit to Sun.Star Cebu offices last Monday to promote the movie which opened the other day in selected theatres in Cebu.
Sun.Star Life and Leisure (SSLL): How were you discovered?
Nina Lopez: I was watching the Miss Cebu 2002 pageant last January at the grand ballroom of Waterfront Cebu City Hotel when there was this nice middle-aged, plain-looking woman who approached me, and asked me if was interested in joining show biz. At first, I was hesitant because, in the first place, I didn’t know her. Then later, I realized that she was Bing Tongco, the manager of Klaudia Koronel and Jodi Santa Maria.
SSLL: I thought you were one of the finalists in Miss Cebu 2002?
Nina: No, I was in the audience, cheering for Melanie Ediza (who won this year’s Miss Cebu title). Because we used to go to the same school, Cebu Doctors’ College. I was taking up nursing then but I stopped because of this ‘amazing offer.’ I finished high school in CIT (Cebu Institute of Technology).
SSLL: Do you have previous beauty titles?
Nina: Yup, I was crowned Miss Balamban 1999 and Miss Guns Club 2000 in Lahug. I also received a number of awards for various bikini open competitions.
SSLL: Is that your real name?
Nina: Cheryl Mae Espadon.
SSLL: How many are you in the family?
Nina: I’m the middle in a brood of five. My father works abroad while my mom is a plain housewife.
SSLL: Aren’t you afraid of what your family might think after what you did in this movie?
Nina: Honestly, they were strongly against it. But I explained to them that this was just a stepping stone, the way Rosanna Roces did it or Vilma Santos, who were also into bold movies before. I promised them that I would work harder to become a better and more respectable actress in the future.
SSLL: What’s this Biglang Liko all about and how bold really are you in this movie?
Nina: My name here is Daisy, a prostitute. I did several breast and back exposures together with Halina and Barbara. Naa sad koy frontal pero gipalayo lang ang camera. I also have sizzling scenes with lead actors Gerald Madrid and Harold Pineda. It’s the typical love-hate relationship but there’s a redeeming lesson in the end of the story.
