Universal Learning Center opens, offers English training programs
Universal Learning Center, Inc. (Ulci), which formally opened recently, is offering course programs which include Spanish, communication skills, the American Constitution, American English, among others.
This Northbridge, California-based recruitment agency owned by Randy and Susan Henry aims to let applicants know more about U.S. culture and language. Since Susan is from Cebu, she and her husband decided to open the center here.
Dr. Edgar Alosbaños, former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of San-Jose Recoletos (USJ-R), is now the center’s director.
Ulci will provide formal training in spoken English to teachers and nurses alike for work abroad. Ulci said with the current shortage of teachers and nurses in the U.S. and the rise of the number of graduates here in the Philippines, it acts as link, allowing both ends to meet.
Randy said their school intends to prepare teachers to be better equipped. “Another distinctive feature we have is that we teach Spanish to our teachers so they can communicate effectively with their students about Hispanic culture in America,” he said.
He added, “The United States is a melting pot. States near the Western border such as California have thousands of immigrants each year coming from Mexico who illegally cross the border.”
A lot of reasons account for the sudden boom in teacher employment in the US. Teachers in the US have not really concentrated in the academe, thus math and science teachers usually end up as either scientists or mathematicians. The need for teachers in these subjects has been crucial. Also, the working environment abroad is very different compared to the Philippines. “ The students here are easier to discipline,” Randy said.
Ulci, however, does not only cater to teachers alone. Individuals who wish to learn more about the English language may avail themselves of the school’s offerings. The center is located in Queens road near the Redemptorist Church.
