Clubs urged to join Ultimate Karate tilt
By Patrick C. Costelo

AT LEAST eight karate clubs have signed up for the 1st Cebu City Ultimate Karate Championships that will blast off on Aug. 31 at the Ayala Entertainment Center.

The Shotokan Karate Academy (SKA) International, YMCA Karate Club, Central Visayas Karatedo Association (CVKA) and the Japan Karate Association (JKA) have expressed their intention to join the competition. The other four are Shotokan Karatedo Organization (SKO), Association of Karate Enthusiasts (AKE), University of the Visayas Varsity and the Kauswagan Self-Defense Brotherhood (KSDB).

Organized by Contact Sports and sanctioned by the Cebu City Sports Commission and the Cebu City Council’s committee on sports, games and amusements, the competition will serve as one of the qualifying events of the Cebu City karatedo team that will compete in the Batang Pinoy tournament in December. The Osmeña Cup last May was the first qualifying event.

“I want all karatedo clubs in the City, whether sanctioned by the Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) or not, to take part in this tournament. We organize tournaments in biking, triathlon and other sports without the sanction of their mother organizations. Why can’t we do the same for Karatedo?” said Councilor Jack Jakosalem.

Entries may be submitted to the Cebu City Sports Center conference room until 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 26.

The contest is presented by Casio G-Shock, the Rotary Club of Banilad, Y101, Durano Industries Inc., San Miguel Corp. and Informatics. Other sponsors are Rudy Project, Phones and Gadgets Inc., Osaka Iridology, Kamaru, Guardo Sports, Greenwhich and Baseline Sports and Recreation Center.
