Peñalosa keeps int’l title By Rommel C. Manlosa
FORMER world champion Gerry Peñalosa scored a technical knockout at the start of eighth round over Japanese challenger Seiji Tanaka to retain his WBC International super-flyweight belt last Tuesday at the Blaidell Center Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Peñalosa punished Tanaka from the start until the seventh round causing a gash on the challenger’s left eye on the way to retaining the belt he won in 2001.
The victory over Tanaka (11-5-8) fortified Peñalosa’s date as mandatory challenger with WBC 115-pound champion Masamori Tokuyama sometime in November this year.
The pummeling and the deep cut forced Tanaka to give up as he failed to respond to the eighth round bell, giving Peñalosa his 46th win against four defeats and two draws in 12 years as a professional fighter.
In the undercard, WBC No.2 junior flyweight contender and WBC International light flyweight champion Juanito Rubillar stopped Takayuiki Kourogi in the third of their 10-round fight.
While welterweight Teddy Limoz Jr. stopped Pimnimit Sittarun in the ninth round of a 10-round contest.
IBF super bantamweight champion Manny Pacquiao engaged former world champion and heavier Hawaiian native Jesus Salud in a three-round exhibition match.
