A food festival to foster economic, cultural ties

The Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, evokes visions of an ancient land surrounded by mystery and allure. And the people of Thailand once referred to as Siamese are now called “Thai”, which itself means “free”, Thailand being the “Land of the Free”. Since the country changed its system to a constitutional monarchy after a bloodless revolution in 1932, the country has always been open to trade and economic relations with its neighboring countries.

The Garden Cafe at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel in cooperation with Cathay Pacific and Cebu Pacific Catering Services presents “Savory Siam”, A Thai food festival featuring a nightly dinner buffet that will start on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. This ten-day festival will feature the unique spicy tastes of Thailand and brings the combined culinary skills of chefs Somriat Saithong and Yenjai Suthiwaja from the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa.

The food festival is also supported by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) headed by Joe Ng, president and honorary trade adviser to the Royal Thai Kingdom. “The coming Thai food festival is a way that Thailand can forge cultural and economic relations with Cebu,” Ng said in a press conference.

“We have always shared this objective. In fact, CCCI is sponsoring a business forum on how to do business with Thailand to be held at the Grand Convention Center on Sept. 21 at 12 noon. Everyone is invited.”

According to Dotti Viajar-Wurgler, CCMH food and beverage manager, Savory Siam features favorites that include Tom Khagi (chicken soup in coconut milk), Pla Tod Kra tiem (deep-fried fish in garlic and pepper), Panaeng nuea (beef curry with thick coconut sauce), Phad Thai (thai style fried noodle), the popular Tom Yam Goong (a spicy prawn soup with lemon), and the spicy TOm Yam (seafood cooked with lemon grass). Salads are a selection of the following recipes: Yam Pla dook foo (catfish salad with mango), Yam Som O (pomelo spicy salad), Yam naam sod (pork skin salad with peanut). For desserts, one may sample items like To ko (sweetcorn in padang leaf), Kanoom mou kaang pueng (Taro custard), Kao neaw mamumg (sticky rice with mango).

Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific Cebu manager Lawrence Fong announced that diners taking the Thai dinner buffet can join the grand raffle and get a chance to win a roundtrip airfare to Bangkok via Cathay Pacific and an overnight stay for two at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa. Dinner buffet is P600 per person; children below six years old are free of charge while those 12 and above get a 50% discount.

Other special partners to the “Savory Siam” food festival are Krua Thai, Europa Delicatessen and Butcher Shop, Pinky Chaang and Jaime Chua.
