Baby Lancers hit back
By Rommel C. Manlosa

Games on Saturday
(University of San Carlos Gym)
1 p.m. – USC vs. UV (jrs.)
2:30 p.m. – USJ-R vs. UC (jrs.)
4 p.m. – USP vs. UV (srs.)
5:30 p.m. – USJ-R vs. UC (srs.)

THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball competition’s Final Four begins this afternoon amid questions on player eligibility haunting one of the semifinalists.

After the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors filed their protest against three University of the Visayas Baby Lancers – Arjay Leonard Arevalo, Andy Mejos and Marc Retchum Denison – with the Commissioner’s Office, UV countered by presenting proof that the documents of the players concerned are clear of discrepancies.

The high-school semifinals, however, will continue until Commissioner Baldomero Estenzo decides on the protest. UV will battle the Baby Warriors in today’s semis opener.

“USC has submitted a certificate from the Department of Education to support its allegations. However, UV also submitted a certificate from the DepEd refuting the claims,” Estenzo told Sun.Star last night.

“The same person issued the certifications (to USC and UV), so I gave USC time to comment on the certificate secured by UV. For the meantime, until we can resolve the matter, the high-school games will continue.”

Should Estenzo find enough grounds to uphold the protest, UV will be disqualified from the semis, although there will be no team that would take its place, leaving only USC, University of San Jose-Recoletos and University of Cebu to vie in the round robin semis.

“Whether I rule in favor of the protest or against it, no team will be added into the semis,” clarified Estenzo.

USC presented documents proving the three UV players have back subjects. Cesafi does not allow high-school players to be in an “international” year level, or having subjects that belong from different year levels.

Meanwhile, college defending champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers eye to stretch their winning run as they face the No.4 finisher University of Southern Philippines Panthers at 4 p.m., to be followed by the USJ-R Jaguars versus UC Webmasters main game.

The UC Baby Webmasters and the USJ-R Baby Jaguars take on each other in the other high-school game today.
