Kwarta enters semis
By Rommel C. Manlosa

THE Eddie Ybañez-mentored ML Kwarta Padala entered the semifinal round after pulling an 83-51 victory over the hapless Misamis Institute of Technology quintet yesterday morning in the Siquijor Mayor’s Cup at the jampacked Siquijor Municipal Gym.

Their quarterfinal win was preceded by an 86-76 victory over Foundation University of Dumaguete City Friday night. The Cash Forwarders were to play Informatics last night in the crossover semifinals.

Again the guns of Danilo Aying and Ricky Ricafuente and the imposing presence of Jessie Lumantas in the middle largely contributed to the Cash Forwarders’ victory.

Aying scored 18 points and Ricafuente added 14, while Lumantas finished with 12. Christoper Carretas contributed 12 for ML Kwarta Padala’s mastery over the Ozamis City-based MIT.

Against Foundation University, the Cash Forwarders were relentless as the Dumagueteños tried to match every basket scored by the Cebuanos.

Rematch vs. Jewelers

“Now we are targeting another championship match against M. Lhuillier. For now we are one man short because Paeng Santos is down with fever, but I believe the hearts of my players and the support of the local crowd here would give us enough boost against the Jewelers. But first we need to win against Informatics tonight (last night),” said Ybañez.

Against Foundation University, Aying scored 22 points while Ricafuente, who has decided to move to Cebu after he was discarded in the Spring Cooking Oil line-up in Manila, added 21 markers.

Also producing double figures were Lumantas with 14 and Carretas finishing with 12. Rico Villahermosa topped Foundation U. with 19 and Edgar Corsami finished with 18.

Informatics, which has former Cash Forwarders Richard Caliao, Ariel Trumpeta, Ray Maraño and Silver Villafuerte, has the core of the North Cotabato Braves that defeated ML Kwarta Padala during the elimination round of the recently concluded CBL Crunchtime early this month.

ML Kwarta (86) – Aying 22, Ricafuente 21, Lumantas 14, Carretas 12, Santos 4, de Jesus 4, Alvarado 2, Ferraren 2. Foundation U. (76) – Villahermosa 19, Corsami 18, Diokom 7, Arellano 6, Joyohoy 6, Arellano 6, Dequitos 4, Duran 4, Navarro 3, Caducoy 2, Acabal 2. Quarterscores: 24-17; 44-31; 62-47; 86-76.
