Marfa fights for Paba title today
By Rommel C. Manlosa

FABIO Marfa takes on a mission where three other ring gladiators have failed.

Marfa, of the Sammy G. Gello-ani Stable, fights for a World Boxing Association (WBA) regional belt – the Pan-Asia Boxing Association 105-pound title – today in Uttaradith Province, Thailand.

Meanwhile, Marfa’s stablemate Bert Batawang is scheduled to defend his Philippine Boxing Federation 108lb belt against Marvin de la Cruz tonight at the Mandaluyong Gym.

It will be Batawang’s fourth defense of the title he won in October 2001 against Flash Villacura in Davao City.

Batawang, a 10-year veteran, failed to unite the RP and PBF junior flyweight belts as he bowed to the superior skilled Wendell Janiola last July 26 at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.

Marfa faces a huge task against Pornsawan Pramuk of Thailand, who has defended the belt three times already, winning all by knockout.

“Maybe Marfa will also have to be lucky because the champion is very good. But I trust the boy. He is more experienced and he has a lot of determination. This might be a good break for him,” said handler Sammy Gello-ani.

“What happened to Sonny Boco was just pure accident. Boco was younger and inexperienced. Marfa has fought more fights and has been training hard,”

The Muay Thai champion Pornsawan ended the budding career of Boco last April 13 in Popeit province, Cambodia during his second defense. Boco, who had to be hospitalized after the fight, is slowly recovering from that near-fatal loss.
