Fedex renews commitment to shoulder Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge’s lighting cost
By Aledel A. Gonzalez

THE international forwarding company that earlier ceased to shoulder lighting expenses for the Marcelo Fernan Bridge is now willing to do it again.

However, Airfreight 2100 Inc. (Fedex) has to sign a new memorandum of agreement with the Mactan-Cebu Bridge Management Committee since its earlier agreement was with the defunct Mactan-Cebu Bridge Management Board.

The bridge committee also wants 24-hour security on the two bridges linking Mactan Island to mainland Cebu.

But with the lack of personnel, policemen could only patrol the bridges at certain hours of the day.

Lighting expenses for the Marcelo Fernan Bridge have reached some P1.3 million, prompting the Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) and the Mactan Electric Company (Meco) to issue notices of disconnection.

But engineer Pericles Dakay, private sector representative of the committee, yesterday said that the problem is now solved with the forwarding company’s intention to pay for the lighting expenses for a period of five years.

Dakay said that a “win-win solution” was reached as the company is allowed to put up its signages at the bridge.

Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu, 6th district) is also giving P500,000 from her Priority Development Assistance Fund for the lighting expenses.

The 48-hour notice of disconnection from Veco was issued last Sept. 26 and addressed to Department of Public Works and Highways 7 Director Juanito Abergas.

The bill, amounting to some P604,065, was for the period October 2001 to August 2002.

Meco, for its part, sent a statement of account to Abergas last Sept. 2 for bills amounting to some P726,915 covering the same period.
