Mayol to top bill Dec. 14 card
By Rommel C. Manlosa

WORLD title-hopeful and RP mini-flyweight champion Rodel Mayol will lead the Cebuano fighters in storming Manila as he headlines the Fistorama boxing presentation of Boy Cantada at the Cantada Sports Complex on Dec. 14.

The Stonewall Boxing Club ace fighter will try to inch closer to the top 10 of the WBC 105-pound ratings as he puts his unbeaten record of 11 wins (nine knockouts) on the line against hard-hitting Thai fighter Petchdonsak Sakpanya in a 10-round encounter.

Mayol annexed the national belt after beating Niño Suelo last Aug. 3 in Mandaue City.

With his unbeaten record and powerful fists, Mayol will be the favorite in this fight, but the Thai is expected not to go for an upset victory.

Sakpanya will be eyeing to get the lofty rating of the 20-year-old Mandaue native in the international boxing bodies.

Currently, Mayol is ranked No.1 in the OPBF, No.9 in the WBA light flyweight and No.11 in the WBC 105lb category. He is groomed by Japanese matchmaker Joe Koizumi and Japan’s topnotch promoter Akihiko Honda as their next project after Randy Suico.

Also seeing action is the reigning RP light-flyweight king Wyndel “Braveheart” Janiola, who will fight the durable and tough Pygmy Muangchaiyaphum also of Thailand for 10 rounds.

Janiola, highly rated in many international boxing bodies, sports an 11-0 win-loss record with five knockout wins. The WBC No.8, OPBF No.3, WBA No.8 and IBF No.5 contender, Janiola, will be pitted against the Pan-Asia Boxing Association No.5 rated Pygmy who is known as Thailand’s “Little Bull.”

The fight will surely test Janiola’s punching power as Pygmy, who earlier lost to Joma Gamboa and Mayol in a three-knockdown rule, is better known for his toughness in the ring.

Also seeing action is the long-missed Rolando Gerongco, who will fight RP super-flyweight No.8 contender Jovelito Oracion of Mandaluyong City.
