By Christian Ben Rodriguez

THE sprint distance will be utilized for the junior sprint triathletes aged 16 to 19 years old in the National Triathlon Trials and 4th Inter-club Championships on Jan. 18 in Cebu.

While the National Open, National Under-23, Club Competition and the higher age-groupers will be enduring the standard distance course of 51.5 kilometers.

Carlo Carrasco, Visayas-Mindanao triathlon coordinator, said the junior sprint triathletes will be enduring the sprint distance of 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5km run.

The other divisions will use the 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run.

The race will start and conclude at the Plantation Bay Resort in Mactan.

In the Club competition, each team will have five members with at least one female who will all endure racing individually. The members’ time clockings will be summed up to determine the team’s overall time.

The team with the best time will be sent by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (Trap) and the Philippine Sports Commission abroad to race in the upcoming Asia Cup triathlon event.

“It is a pleasure having the NTT hosted here in Cebu as it will attract many triathletes because Cebu is the very heart of triathlon in the south,” Carrasco said.

He added that through the race many of the new and young triathletes can even make it to the developmental pool of the national team come February when the new line-up takes effect.

He also said that the Trap coaching staff is looking forward to newcomers, while also encouraging potential national team members to come and join the competition.
