Villa Shipping wins Friendship Cup title

THE Zaldy Villa-led Villa Shipping Lines swept its best-of-three championship series last Friday night after blasting the younger Huida Sanitary Wares, 97-79, in Game 2 to rule 3rd Cebu Eastern College Friendship Cup-2002 basketball tournament at the CEC Gym.

It was a seesaw battle in the first three periods with Huida taking a slim lead, 67-64, at the end of the third canto behind Danny Ting, Jong Yu and Allan Ting, who poured points from inside and outside.

In the final quarter, the Shippers began to wax hot and took hold of the lead courtesy of flashy guard earn Saguindel, who launched several breakaway drives, and Arthur “Doc” Sy, who did most of the damage from the outside, nailing five triples all in the last canto.

Top center Shaun Wang and George Artus joined the fray in the offensive going to anchor Villa’s game-clinching crown.

But Chaiky Uy and Sonny Tiu put together one of their best defensive efforts to limit Huida’s offensive output to only 12 points in the fourth and final quarter.

In the preliminary, Fiesta Tasty Juicy Hotdogs grabbed the third place after beating Triton Paints, 85-72. Sam Sia led the Hotdogs with 20 points, while Anwar Satina fired 15 and Conrad Tan added 14.
