Carmen into finals By Patrick C. Costelo Sun.Star Correspondent
MLKP-CARMEN found its way into the title game after trouncing University of San Carlos, 4-0, in yesterday’s match of the ML Kwarta Padala Under-18 football tournament at the Cebu International School pitch.
The all-collegiate USC team simply couldn’t contain the younger Carmen’s devastating firepower, which opened the floodgates as early as the third minute when Junard Aguilar booted in Carmen’s first goal.
USC staggered on offense in the opening minutes giving costly ball possessions to Carmen, which was blazing on offense after the kickoff.
Eight short minutes later, Randel Cano shot through USC’s collapsing wall to deliver goal number two for Carmen in the 11th minute while USC rolled on with a wobbly offense.
The ensuing minutes saw USC step up on defense, which momentarily stalled Carmen’s offensive roll, but still fell short.
Before the first half closed, though, Carmen managed to drop another stunner in the 37th minute courtesy of the scorching Marvin Borce, who has been a regular scorer for the MLKP squad in the tournament.
The deciding half further spelled tragedy for USC’s main guns Jack Daño, Rennuel Colina and Napoleon Almirante, who were deprived of their usual breaks with the constant hounding of Carmen’s defenders.
Carmen, on the other hand, was unable to convert on some breaks after the second half but Arni Pasinabo broke the temporary scoring silence after draining Carmen’s resounding fourth goal in the 57th minute.
Putting out scoreless USC’s last surge of a possible comeback in the final 20 minutes of play, Carmen already smelled the sweet scent of a finals berth.
Meanwhile, Cebu will face Iloilo in the regional finals of the 19th edition of the Coke Go-for-Goal Under-16 football tournament at the CIS field at 9 a.m. today.
Earlier in the elimination, Cebu thrashed Bacolod, 4-2, while Bacolod ousted defending champion Iloilo, 3-0. The winner will advance to the national finals in Dumaguete City in February. |
