Castañares to defend title against Marzan By Rommel C. Manlosa
DINDO “Diesel” Castañares will put his RP super lightweight title at stake against veteran Rex Marzan on Jan. 18 in Sammy Gello-ani’s free-to-the-public boxing promotion at the Gaisano Country Mall car park.
Castañares, who won the title in only his fifth professional fight against veteran Joe Escriber on Dec. 2, 2000, will put the title on the line for the second time.
Since there are not many fighters in the 140-pound division, Gello-ani had to dig deeper in the lightweight division and the heavier welterweight division to find a mandatory challenger for Castañares, who is now rated No.1 in the OPBF.
Castañares’ first defense was on Dec. 7, 2001 where he smothered Renato Andales in just two rounds. Last Oct. 8, Castañares drew with Daigoro Yamamoto in Japan.
In GAB’s November ratings, there are only four contenders listed: No.1 Fernando Sagrado, No.2 Jun Gorres, No.3 Ranel Mercado and No.4 Renato Andales. All of them were not available to fight Castañares.
This could be a short workout against the veteran Marzan but the possibility of an upset is there since the Mindanao-based challenger packs a knockout punch.
Marzan was defeated by Castañares’ stablemate Bart Abapo last Oct. 19 by unanimous decision in Mandaue City under the 130lb division.
