Float carries recycled Capitol building replica
By Karen M. Flores

IMAGES of the Sto. Niño and the Capitol building will be the key features of the Cebu Province’s float during the grand parade today.

Learning from previous years, Gwendolyn Garcia, Capitol consultant on systems, promotion and development, said people easily recognize which float belongs to the Province when they see the replica of the Capitol building.

This year, Capitol only set aside about P20,000 for its float because they are recycling the building they used in their entry last year.

Garcia said with a laugh that they have so far been unsuccessful in convincing two Capitol officials to stand as Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana on top of the float.

The image of the Sto. Niño, with its red cape, is three feet tall. It is the same image enshrined at the Capitol chapel in the building’s third floor.

In the float, series lights will be connected from the Niño to the replica of the Capitol to
signify “rays” coming from the Child Jesus to the Provincial Government.

“It is a symbolism, that the rays of light are forever needed to guide us here in the Province,” Garcia told reporters.

The replica of the Capitol building is 1.2 meters high, three meters long and three meters wide. It is made of wood and is painted off-white, like the building itself.

Provincial Engineer Peter Madera said the color of the Sto. Niño will stand out because it will be against the whiteness of the Capitol replica.

The float will be mounted on an Elf truck.

As in the past, Capitol will not be competing in the float category.

In Sinulog 2002, however, it seems there was a mix-up since Capitol was awarded second place although it did not register for the competition.

Madera said they returned the award.

Capitol spent P35,000 last year.
