Tangub contingent takes us back to Old Cebu By Charmaine Y. Rodriguez
AFTER delighting crowds with their performance of “Cebu in the 1920s,” Tangub City’s Tribu Sinanduloy, the defending champion in the Sinulog-based category, will again give importance to history.
Three panels with photographic reproductions of old Cebu scenes will be among the highlights of the group’s production number this year.
A hundred dancers will be in costumes inspired by paintings of early Filipino artists Damian Domingo and Jose Honorata Lozada.
The photographic reproductions will include Fort San Pedro, Magellan’s Cross kiosk, an old house on Mabini St., the interior of Basilica del Sto. Niño and the Magallanes St. that used to be Cebu City’s business district.
Baby Paller, the city’s tourism officer, said the presentation will focus on paying homage to the Sto. Niño.
At the start of the dance, an image of the Sto. Niño will descend from the heavens protected and guided by cherubs and angels.
The dancers will wear modified versions of the Balintawak, the patadyong and the barong Filipino in “vibrant color schemes.”
Paller said they are optimistic about still winning the top prize, which has helped them gain prestige in the whole country for the past two years.
Aside from showcasing their talents, the Tangub City Government also wants to promote their place, which is also known as the Christmas Symbols Capital of the Philippines, to increase tourist arrivals and promote economic activity.
“We want everyone to know that there’s a place in Mindanao that’s peaceful and worth visiting, Paller told Sun.Star.
Tangub City is in Misamis Occidental.
Last year, the group won first prize with their calesa and a train set depicting the 1920s Cebu.
Jogen Pascual, chairman of the history department of the University of San Carlos, is still the choreographer.
As in last year, Pascual did some research to come up with the unique concept.
