Micame: MCIAA Board made the right decision By Rel P. Micame
PIT SEÑOR. Ce- buanos from all parts of the province and devotees from the different areas in the country will converge at the Basilica del Sto. Niño starting at 4 a.m. today for the Holy Mass that will usher in the annual fiesta celebration in honor of patron saint Señor Sto. Niño. The devotees will be coming in and out of the basilica as there are masses the whole day. The daytime population of the city will further swell this morning as visitors come in droves to witness the Sinulog parade. Contingents from all over the province and from the neighboring cities in the Visayas and Mindanao will dance their way from Plaza Inde-pendencia to the Cebu City Sports Center.
To all visitors and guests, welcome to Cebu’s biggest religious event. Viva Sto. Niño! Pit Señor!
RIGHT DECISION. The board of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) is right in their decision to undertake the repairs of the runway by administration. MCIAA general manager Angelo Verdan said the board is fed up with the unnecessary delay of the P46-million project’s implementation caused by the legal maneuvers of bidders. Echelon Industries Inc., which had prequalified to bid in the airport runway repair project, filed a petition with the court for the issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the implementation of the project by the Air Transportation Office (ATO). The MCIAA, during the administration of then general manager Alfonso had executed a contract with ATO for the repair of the project. On July 19, 2002, RTC Judge Ireneo Lee Gako Jr. issued a writ of injunction against the implementation of the repair of Runway 04, alleging Echelon may have a legal right over such project.
Verdan said that without the contractor, MCIAA will be able to save a lot of money which can be used to hire additional personnel to undertake the repairs and engage the services of a consultant to supervise the project.
Contractors should not prevent MCIAA from undertaking the repair of Runway 04 for the interest and welfare of thousands of travelers coming into and departing from Mactan Cebu International Airport.
FIRM DECISION. Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña is really firm in his decision. He turned down the request of the Sto. Nino Vendors’ Association (SNVA) to be allowed to sell religious articles at the Basilica’s sidewalk. The SNVA’s stalls, which had become an institution at the basilica’s sidewalk for several years, were ordered demolished last year by Mayor Osmeña. Early this week, the vendors led by their president Basan Amora pleaded with Osmeña to be allowed to sell at the basilica’s sidewalk for just two days, alleging their members had suffered losses since the demolition of their stalls last year. But the city’s chief executive did not budge.
However, the police must always be on the lookout for SNVA members who vowed to play “cat and mouse” with the police in selling their articles at the basilica’s premises.
REMINDER. Realtor A. Jun Gultiano Jr., Pareb-CCBR founder and adviser, is reminding all real estate brokers and other realty service practitioners about the forthcoming two-day Continuing Education (CE) Seminar on Jan. 25 and 26 at the Holiday Plaza Hotel on F. Ramos St., Cebu City.
To be conducted by the Pareb-Cebu Central Board of Realtors, the CE seminar is a mandatory requirement for all realty service practitioners before their license can be renewed. According to a DTI administrative order, a service practitioner has to submit a certification that he or she has attended 16 hours of continuing education seminar together with his application for renewal of license. For those who passed the examination but failed to secure the license within two years from date of passing the exam, and for those practitioners who failed to renew their license for three consecutive years, they are required to attend 20 hours of the seminar. Failure to submit the certification would mean non-issuance or non-renewal of the license.
Address any inquiries about the seminar to Ms. Ritchel Jumawan, Pareb-CCBR
secretariat tel. numbers 254-5780 or 253-5992.
SCRIPTURE READING. Suggested reading of the Holy Bible for today is found in the Gospel according to St. Mark 10:13-16 “Jesus Blesses Little Children,” Eph. 1:3-18 “God’s Eternal Plan;” Jan. 20—St. Mark 2:18-22 “The Question about Fasting”, and for Jan. 21—St. Mark 2:23-28 “The Question about the Sabbath.”
