Priest tops Cebu Pop Music

THE parish priest of Malabuyoc, Cebu, Fr. Ponce Jed Bellones, came out the big winner in last night’s 21st Cebu Popular Music Festival, with his compositions placing first and second.

Bellones’ earned the top prize of P100,000 for “Gipangandoy nga Tingusbawan,” which dwelt on the plight of overseas Filipino workers, and P60,000 for “Ang Banay Paraiso sa Gugma,” which focused on the family.

First-time finalist Jose Abella, 25, won third place and got P35,000 for “Ipasigarbo ta ang Sugbo.”

Fourteen-year-old Jan Michael Banaynal was chosen as the best interpreter for “Gipangandoy…” He received P5,000.

Five neophyte finalists—Abella, Mar Abella Beronga, Allan Montesa, Emmanuel Sacol, Nicolas Acaso—got P15,000 each while the seven other finalists earned P10,000 each.

Bellones, who hails from Pinamungajan, Cebu, submitted five entries this year, two of which made it to the finals. Out of 110 entries—the most number so far in the history of the Cebu Pop Music Festival—only 12 were picked as finalists.

Acaso, a fourth year high school student of Compostela National High School, was the youngest finalist.

Cebuano singer Max Surban entertained the audience at the packed grand ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City with his brand of Bisaya music.

The three-hour affair, which started at 8:30 p.m., was hosted by broadcaster and newspaper columnist Sam Costanilla and Lou Dayoc.

Dr. Bonifacio Cabahug, who has served as chairman of the 12-member board of judges for the past three years, gave out the cash prizes and trophies to winners.

Among those who watched were Mandaue City Thadeo Ouano and Talisay City Mayor Eduardo Gullas, who initiated the Cebu Pop Music Festival more than two decades ago.

The 12 finalists were “Ang Kinaadman” by Carlito Bebei Betito; “Higala, Ayaw Na,” Bienvenido M. Racho; “Kabugason,” Mar Abella Beronga; “Ang Banay Paraiso sa Gugma, Fr. Jed Ponce Bellones; “Unsaon Na Lang,” Glenn P. Salve, “Ipasigarbo Ta Ang Sugbo,” Jose Abella-Eugene Tan;

“Ang Dalan Mo, Allan Montesa, “Estudyante,” Lauro B. Flores; “Gipangandoy Nga Tingusbawan,” Fr. Jed Ponce Bellones; “Kabatan-on,” Emmanuel Sacol, “Ang Gugma,” Dennis B. Martin-Normie Tomada; and “Haguka Ug Baruganan, Nicolas M. Acaso.
