Chiongbian: Tee Time on the Internet By Edgar R. Chiongbian Tee time
Did you know that this column is getting so popular? I was even informed that many people are reading our column via the Internet in the U.S., Europe, Tokyo and Guam, and thus, enjoying our local golf scene and humor.
So guys, we are not alone and you have an audience so your good behavior is the order of the day. In case you can’t get the paper, just log in to website www.sunstar.com.ph, and presto – your very own personal copy. If you have something nice to say I’m on edcels@skyinet.net but if you don’t, please send it to the other paper.
I have played the Mango Tee a few times to know that the Coral Tee in Cebu, even now, lives up to its tradition and very comparable to the way other Tees are being run in Manila.
What makes this tournament successful is the presence of out-of-town visitors who liven up the place with wholesome display of golf fellowship between members and all guests.
They come because they know that this is a good event. While playing the Coral Tee, I witnessed and heard many comments about how some players from other local clubs here behave at the golf course. Guys this is not a basketball game, this is golf and some consideration of movement and loud talk or cheering while others are playing is unacceptable.
Another Sinulog event that’s always successful is the five-cock derby of Century Game Club, which was well participated this year with 200 entrees and a total prize money of P2.7 million. Some of our golfers rushed right after their golf game at CCC to catch the cockfights. Even cousin Dick C. tagged along with the golfers to do some betting.
Well it’s official – the Plantation Tee at Mercedes Golf & CC is set for February 7 and 8 with two days of fun but only one day of play. I understand that you can choose to play either as member/guest or guest/guest. The key to playing this tournament is to go car-pooling with your buddies.
A good suggestion to Mercedes G&CC, is to hire a bus for the players to ride. One at 4:30 a.m. and the other at 8am and return with the buses you rode in. Remember that this is for the long haul so if you do it right the first time, it will go a long way! Hey cousin Bruce C, Clifford Celdran & Ed Misa, you guys better have your showcase ready because we are all coming to check out your golf course.
Next week, the Rotary Club of Cebu will bring 80 golfers from Japan, Malaysia, Manila, Makati and Iloilo for the 6th Int’l golf tournament at Alta Vista and Cebu Country Club.
Incoming president of RC Cebu, Tony Lozada is so ecstatic about this event that he has asked Mayor Osmeña to welcome the guests at the welcome dinner in Cebu Plaza on the 22nd.
Also participating in this golf event is RC Cebu-East with their golf aces, Bowen Gothong, Ed de Leon and Manny Lucido, in high pursuit of the trophies.
Orly Israel said, “You know when you have played golf four times with a person, the real character of that person will show up and everything will spill right out in front of you”.
Yeah, said Rolly Santos who added: “Not only that, in four rounds you will really know if
he has integrity or not”.
What’s the lesson here? When Orly and Rolly invite you to play golf just say “no thanks I want to keep my character and integrity intact”. Heehee.
Every time I see Danny Deen, I hear him say: “Media, media, watch out the media, media is here. Then everyone stops talking. I wonder what that means.”
GOLF TIP: To make your fairway woods fly high and have more backspin when it lands on the green, you need to hit the ball with a slightly descending blow with some adjustments on your stance and ball position. Move the ball an inch back in your stance and step an inch closer to the ball. This will encourage a more upright swing plane and promotes contact with the ball before the clubhead reaches the bottom of its arc.
Make sure you take a small divot after impact.
