Salud’s ‘new’ plans for Philippine boxing
By Rommel C. Manlosa

SPORTSMAN Rudy Salud is bent on changing the customary skills and brute ways of Filipino boxers to scientific and modern ways in order to mold new world champions.

The former PBA commissioner will adopt the new system that includes the hiring of personal sports psychologists and nutritionists and capped by the personalized handling of the noted American trainer Freddie Roach – the new trainer of the flamboyant former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.

“I’m doing this as payback to what our country has done to me,” said Salud during a casual meeting with local sports scribes and Cebu boxing patron Antonio Aldeguer at Patio Isabel in Banilad yesterday. “I want (help) elevate the status of boxers for himself and I want to earn the glory for the country and elevate our standing in the international community. I am now in the twilight of my life, and I want to dedicate this to lift the morale of Filipinos.”

Salud, who was one of the principal authors of the World Boxing Council charter, is scouting for potential talent that could help materialize his dream, after his first project – Gerry Peñalosa – retired last week.

“Two of my three sons are very interested in what I am doing,” Salud added. “They called this a project. A project to make a world champion.

“One of my sons is very enthusiastic with the Aldeguer Gym when he saw it. The gym has produced so many talents and world champions – Gerry for one, Joma Gamboa and Malcolm Tuñacao. Upcoming talents Rodel Mayol and Randy Suico whom many believed could be world champions someday.”
