DINDO “Diesel” Castañares gave another classic display of power leading to an extraordinary finale in Sunday’s savage fanfare of muscle and skills in the Sammy Gello-ani, Revicon Boxing Challenge and In This Corner presentation “Sinulog Boxing at the Mall” at the Gaisano Country Mall car park.

Castañares scored a knockout nine seconds before the end of the seventh round over challenger Rex Marzan to keep his RP junior welterweight belt in their scheduled 12-round main event fight.

While Bart Abapo punished and scored two knockdowns over wily veteran Samuel Duran but won by disqualification on the 2:40 mark of the eighth round. After shoving Abapo to the canvas Duran unleashed two uppercuts on Abapo who was kneeling despite referee Badin Rebaya’s order to break up the action.

Attack on ref

Duran aggravated matters when he punched Rebaya on the chest after the latter declared Abapo winner of the contest.

Duran, a veteran warrior of 93 fights in more than 15 years of boxing, may have his boxing license revoked.

“It’s either a suspension or a revocation of his license. Either or the two, but for sure, there will be a sanction for his actions. What he did was a blatant violation of being a professional boxer,” said Games and Amusement Board supervisor Lando Mendoza.

Rebaya, on the other hand, will pursue an administrative case with the GAB office.

“I will definitely push for the revocation of his license. He (Duran) knows the rules – attacking a boxing official in the ring could cost you a license. He hit me in the chest because of what? He knows what he did (to Abapo) warranted disqualification and why did he hit me? His boxing days are over,” Rebaya said.

However, observers partly blamed Rebaya for Duran’s action – the referee never gave any deduction for Duran’s antics including low blows, head butting, excessive holding and pushing.

In the other fights, skillful and elegant Z Gorres pulled a knockout win over Ricky Escaner in 20 seconds of the fourth round and Sherwin Paro knocked out Julius Jalnaiz in 1:24 of the fourth round.

Both fighters started slowly but heated up things with a heavy exchange of punches starting the second round.

With Castañares’ continued head bashing, Marzan also showed that he was a worthy opponent despite his limited fighting skills and Castañares’ aggressiveness and hand speed.

Castañares’ continued striking caused a deep cut below Marzan’s left eye that even made the challenger fiercer as he started another round of exchanges despite being tagged many times.

With time winding down in the seventh round, Castañares cornered Marzan and before the challenger could escape, the defending champion unleashed the bout-ending right overhand that found its target right to Marzan’s jaw.

Marzan dropped to the canvas unconscious and referee Teddy Alivio did not bother to count as he came to the rescue of the fallen boxer who was revived two minutes later.

“I was trying to elude his head butt, that’s why I kept on hitting his head,” Castañares said. “I salute Marzan for his toughness despite being groggy many times starting in the third round.

“He still managed to throw counterpunches giving me a hard time to finish him off. That last punch was a right overhand, it hit on a perfect timing when he was about to raise his head.”

Other winners were Isidro Lorona Jr. via split decision over Elmer Gejon, Alman Defensor by TKO in 2:18 of the third round over Felix Jun Demecillo and Cerillo Cabillon scored a unanimous win over George Salugaol.
