Brochure on festivals, WOW packages to spur tourism
By Jessica B. Natad

THE Balik Cebu committee will use its Cebu Festivals and Events 2004 brochure, its marketing tool for Cebu’s tourism industry, to complement the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) WOW Philippines program.

According to Balik Cebu committee chairman Tetta Baad, the brochure is specifically Cebu’s marketing tool that would entice both local and foreign tourists to keep coming back to the region to witness the different festivals in its provinces—Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.

The brochure is the committee’s first effort. We thought that events and fiestas will make tourists come again and again every year to the region, she said.

The committee has expanded the brochure’s scope to the entire region from covering only Cebu province to be able to sell Cebu, the gateway to the other provinces in the region, the whole year round.

The brochure features various events in the region from January to December including the Sinulog Festival in Cebu, as well as special package rates that tourists can avail themselves of.

Baad said the brochure would not compete with the government’s WOW Philippines program, the DOT’s marketing tool.

The WOW Philippines program in the region includes tours to show off Cebu’s as well as the other provinces’ heritage and tourist spots such as Cebu’s centuries-old churches, Bohol’s Chocolate Hills, and Negros Oriental’s dolphins.

She said the committee would also be developing a website that will be linked to the WOW Philippines website.

The Balik Cebu committee is a collaboration of the government and private sectors including the DOT 7, Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and tourism players in the private sector.

The long-term objective of the committee is to link all stakeholders of Cebu’s tourism industry to make tourism the engine of growth in Cebu, Baad said.
