PBA-bound cogs strike for Welcoat

LUCENA CITY – Seasoned veterans and Philippine Basketball Association-bound players Romel Adducul and Eddie Laure provided the needed experience to pull through the extra period as Welcoat claimed Game 1, 77-68, yesterday at the kickoff of the PBL Challenge Cup Finals at the Quezon Convention Center here.

Meanwhile, LBC-Ba-tangas turned to Ralph Rivera and Alex Compton down the last five minutes to outlast Blu All-Purpose, 74-68, and move a win away from clinching third place.

The Detergent Kings were ahead, 62-61, with 4:38 remaining when Rivera, who finished with 17 points, unleashed seven straight points in a 9-1 run to erect a 70-63 lead, 1:15 left.

Compton, who led Batangas with 24 points, six rebounds and eight assists, iced the win sinking all four free throws in the last 31 seconds.

The Paint Masters showed that a big heart is way beyond better than the distinct Dazz character as they rallied back from a 18-point third quarter deficit, 36-54.

Ronald Tubid unleashed 16 of his 19 points, while Jean Marc Pingris, coming off from a stiff neck injury, added 10 of his 13 to engineer a 25-6 blast to wrest the upper hand, 61-60, on Tubid’s basket, 2:52 remaining in the regulation period.

Seldom-used Dennis Miran-da proved to be a surprise ace up Austria’s sleeves. Peter June Simon fired a trey to hand the Greasebusters a 66-64 edge in the last 39.4 seconds of the regulation period when Miranda rose to the occasion and drilled in the basket that forged the extra period.

In the overtime period, Dazz only stayed close at 68, following Nino Gelig’s jumper with three minutes remaining.

It was then that the Paint Masters got their acts together. Laure sank a jumper while Adducul pulled two free-throws off Allan Salangsang for a 72-68 edge, with 1:12 to go.

That gave Welcoat the much needed momentum down the stretch as Paul Artadi fired a trey in the final 21.1 seconds while Miranda wrapped up the victory with another basket down the last 2.7 seconds.

Welcoat 77 – Tubid 21, Laure 13, Pingris 13, Adducul 11, Artadi 11, Capus 6, Miranda 4, Orfrecio 0, Cuan 0, Mamaclay 0. Dazz 68 – Simon 18, Ferriols 11, Gelig 9, Baguio 8, Dy 6, Dualan 6, Tan 6, Salangsang 2, Mercado 2, Espiritu 0. Quarterscores: 16-8; 26-26; 36-54; 66-66 (reg.); 77-68
