New cycling group may take over Paca

AN OVERHAUL of the national umbrella organization of cycling looms, if rumors about a new cycling group to take over the place of the Philippine Amateur Cycling Association are to be believed.

A source told Sun.Star Cebu recently that it’s possible that Paca, which is under the leadership of Danao City Mayor Ramonito Durano III, may be replaced by the newly-formed Philippine National Cycling Association.

The PNCA is currently organizing the 2003 Air 21 Tour Ng Pilipinas cycling tournament, which will kick off on April 26 in Legaspi City.

A total of 12 teams coming from all over the Philippines will vie for the top honors in the race.

The teams, to composed of seven riders each, are East Visayas, West Visayas, Mindanao, NCR, Bicol, Nueva Ecija, Central Luzon, Pangasinan, Ilokandia, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera and Calabarzon.

The 2,367-kilometer endurance test will be divided into 15 stages, to be raced in 18 days starting from Legaspi City going to Northern Luzon then proceeding to Laoag City before turning back to Baguio and on to Manila.
