Serna: Valentine shows: Lazaro’s ‘Funny Valentine,’ Jude B.’s ‘Not Made Up’
By Roger Serna

It’s the eve of one of the most awaited days of the year: Valentine’s Day. While some people go out of their way to make sure to leave no stones unturned just to make the day a memorable one, there are also those who regard it as “no big deal” since for them everyday is Valentine’s Day. Oww?

Well, whatever group you belong, happy Valentine’s Day to you!

This columnist sat for close to two hours last weekend listening (and being mesmerized, should I say?) to the beauteous Joy Z. Ouano talk about her preoccupation these days, one of which, and one that takes much of her time, is the Spotlite Music and Comedy Bar.

Of course, Joy ranks her four loveable offspring as top priority. I noticed that Joy has already acquired more freedom to talk about her past with no distinguishable rancor in her voice and features. What I saw was a fighter and a survivor. Attalady!

Anyway, Joy was excited about competing with other establishments in attracting clients during the day of hearts and love. She’s confident, though, that loyal clients of Spotlite will still be there having been entertained - from the time the bar opened in a hotel and then transferred to its present location.

Spotlite will have stand-up comedian Philip Lazaro dishing out funny anecdotes in My Funny Valentine. Showtime starts at 8:30 p.m.

Speaking of stand up comedy, yours truly and a handful of colleagues savored the yummy dishes of, yes, Dish Café before witnessing the prelude to the Valentine show of upcoming homegrown stand-up comic Jude Bacalso (of Sun.Star Cebu and Sun.Star Weekend, of course!).

During this paper’s anniversary parties last year, Jude, who was one of the party hosts, displayed his comic flair and his excellence in program hosting. Shortly after that, Jude also kept me and colleagues from turning into stones due to boredom while waiting for the star of a scheduled presscon for a mega event.

Of course, there were also casual encounters where I marveled at this guy’s gift of gab, wit and humor which led me to give him (unofficial, though) the title “Discovery of the Year.

Little did I know, that even before that “title” was conferred to him, Jude had already been entertaining small crowds during corporate functions and private parties.

Now, it seems there’s no more turning back. Jude is mounting “Not Made Up – The Comedy of Jude Bacalso” as Dish Café’s Valentine treat. The more, the merrier, huh!

Talentfolio exec Michael Sarthou, after reading this column last week, confirmed that another local group his firm is handling has just inked a recording contract with Dyna Records. Cueshe, one of the most sought-after musical groups in Cebu will start waxing an album anytime now.

The latest managing firm is also contemplating on acting offers for Cueshe’s frontliners. Lucky guys!

Who said Jolina Magdangal won’t be able to set foot on the station that had practically nurtured her career and catapulted her to her stellar status these days before she jumped over the other side of the fence?

Last Sunday, Jolina sang the song Paraiso side by side with Geneva Cruz (she popularized the song during her teen years), Rachel Alejandro and Anna Fegi in a special presentation celebrating Unilver Philippines’ 75th anniversary aired over ABS-CBN and which was attended by the network’s bigwigs too, among many others.

It was one of the best numbers in the star-studded show with performers including concert king and queen Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez, Bituin Escalante, Dessa, Paolo Montalban, Joanna Ampil and many others.

It was aired late that night that no matter how much will our spirit was spewing that moment, the weakness of the flesh just couldn’t be overlooked. The moments spent were very satisfying though with the aforementioned line-up of performer doing their best. Rare occasion, I tell you.
