DepEd 7 head to meet with CV supervisors
By Christian Ben Rodriguez

REGION 7 Director Carolino Mordeno of the Department of Education will meet with the nine division supervisors of Central Visayas to discuss the approval of the basketball event in regional level competitions.

It was learned that most of the participating regions have already submitted their protest to the DepEd office in Manila regarding the recent change of the eligibility rules for the Palarong Pambansa.

Mordeno told Sun.Star yesterday he will meet with the supervisors on Feb. 24 at 8 a.m. at the Eco-Tech bldg. in Barangay Lahug also to discuss the basketball event.

He said many angles have to be discussed regarding the inclusion of basketball in regional level tournaments and that all decisions will have to be unanimously voted by the nine division supervisors.

“Last year, basketball was not included in the list of events of the competition and again excluded this year,” Mordeno said. “So we will ask all supervisors if they are willing to have it this year.”

He said they are just following the guidelines set by the national office and will have to determine if the different divisions have the budget to host the regional tournament.

Many of the local government units are not happy with the scrapping of basketball – the most popular sport in the Philippines. It is a crowd draw in athletics meets such as the Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (Cviraa).

Meanwhile, many of the participating regions in the Palaro have expressed their sentiments on the new eligibility rules set by the DepEd.

“Many regions have appealed to the national office and we will wait and see their decision as many of these regions have already selected their athletes based on the old guidelines,” Mordeno said.

He added that he will also meet up with the different regional heads during the directors’ meeting to protest the new eligibility rules set on Feb. 21 in Tubud, Lanao Del Norte.
