Janiola fights for IBO belt By Rommel C. Manlosa
INTELLIGENT fighter Wendell Janiola bids for the International Boxing Organization (IBO) junior flyweight title today in Meropa Casino in Polokwane, South Africa.
Janiola, who left with high hopes of bringing back home the IBO belt is oozing with confidence.
Both the champion and the challenger weighed in at 108 pounds in the weighing yesterday.
“Wendell is confident, he has been training hard for this and he really knows what to do,” said Stonewall Boxing Club manager Terry Carter. “Everybody here at the gym is confident that Wendell can win the title because of his dedication and his exceptional talent.”
All those who have watched the fight video of Myekeni assured Carter that his 23-year-old fighter, Janiola, will win the match.
Myekeni’s camp asked the promoter of Golden Gloves Promotions why they pitted their ward against a tough challenger in his first defense.
But Carter said that the IBO is trying to gain respect among the world boxing bodies and wants a tough opposition for its champion to know whether he really deserves to be the title-holder.
“The South African is tailor made for Wendell. He just throws 1-2-3 punches and then boxes up.
His jabs are not crisp and he doesn’t move side to side. Even if he is taller than Wendell, he doesn’t know what Wendell can do,” said Carter.
Aside from the honor that he could bring to the country, Janiola is also trying to send a message to all the light flyweight fighters of his existence. Janiola is scheduled to fight Shingo Yamaguchi for the OPBF 108lb belt on May in Japan.
Janiola seeks to stretch his 13-0, 5 KOs win-loss record against Myekeni’s 16-1, 6KOs slate.
