RP karatekas sweep medals as expected
By Patrick C. Costelo

GEMMA Rose Payacda of Shotokan Karatedo International-Baguio clinched the Women’s Kata championship after a display of lethal grace yesterday in the 16th National Karate Open Championships at the Cebu Coliseum.

National team member Payacda beat Diane Kristine Moral of Dagupan City, Pangasinan in the final match where the former got the judges’ nod for the gold medal while the latter settled for the silver.

Meanwhile, Lourdes Abao of Japan Karatedo Association-CDO and Cebuana Lily
Pacubas of ASK-Talisay City settled for the bronze medals after losing to Payacda and Moral in the semifinals.

The synchronized kata (forms) competition of the two-day tournament kicks off today, while the kumite (sparring) clashes were still in progress at press time last night.

Philippine team members dominated the Men’s Kata event with all but one of the four medals rolling into their hands.

RP squad member Ian George Jerbos of Karate Development, Arts and Sports of Manila impressed both the crowd and the judges sizzling through the stiff elimination round all the way to the championship, beating fellow national squad member and Philippine Navy’s Noel Espinoza, who took the silver after the cardiac final-round loss.

Bagging the bronzes were national team member Emerson Malolos of the Philippine Navy and Marlon Rañoa of Japan Karatedo Association.
