2 Cebu hospitals host Pfizer virtual library By Jessica B. Natad
THE Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM) and the Cebu Doctors Hospital (CDH) were recently named the newest recipients of Pfizer’s Virtual Library Project, an initiative developed by Pfizer, the world’s leading pharmaceutical company, to support its partners in the medical community.
The institutions’ inclusion in the project was determined after meeting the criteria set for the project’s partners. The criteria include being a medical center, a medical school and a respected training institute that makes a significant impact to the healthcare environment.
The partnership was sealed during a signing of the memorandum of agreement by Pfizer’s president and country manager Rey Gerardo Bacarro, CIM’s president Dr. Jacinto Velez Jr. and CDH’s president and chairman of the board Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal Jr. in Cebu City.
Research
The Pfizer Virtual Library Project involves the setting up of virtual libraries in major medical institutions to help doctors, medical practitioners and students conduct medical research.
Among the facilities offered by the Virtual Library are computers, Internet service, a mini-library, conference rooms and audio-visual facilities. The libraries will also allow users to gather information from medical publications and scientific journals to keep them abreast of medical advancements and scientific developments globally.
In addition to the Virtual Libraries, Pfizer has a website partnership project with 29 medical societies. Here, Pfizer develops and hosts the websites of medical societies with the goal of providing immediate access to medical information to members of the society, as well as a venue for the general public to become more informed about specific diseases.
Launched in 2000, the Virtual Library Project is currently implemented in five locations. These are at the Pfizer head office, the Philippine General Hospital-Pfizer Virtual Library, UST-Pfizer Virtual Library, Philippine Heart Center-MAS-Pfizer Information Center for Doctors and Patients and the
DOH-Doctor-to-the-Barrios-Pfizer Training and Learning Center.
Apart from its students and medical professionals, the CIM-Pfizer Virtual Library will be open to all doctors in Cebu. Both centers will be completed in July.
