NHI denies Mandaue’s request to rename street in Maguikay
By Aledel A. Gonzales

THE National Historical Institute is prohibiting the renaming of a street in Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City.

While the institute acknowledges the City’s effort to honor a late councilor who made available a personal property for what is now the Maguikay Elementary School, renaming a street after him could not be allowed.

“This would disrupt the continuity of the present name of the street, which is contrary to the policy on the naming and renaming of streets,” stated chairman Ambeth Ocampo in his letter to the City Council.

The Mandaue City Council is appealing to the Institute that they be allowed to rename a portion of Marcelino Echavez St. to Bernardino Ceniza Albaño St.

The City Council, through a resolution filed by Councilor Dionisio Ceniza, passed a resolution saying the measure only corrects an oversight by the city council then in 1997.

Albaño St. starts from the corner of M. L. Quezon St., passes the Maguikay Elementary School and goes all the way to the corner of Mardonio Ceniza St.

That particular road was “erroneously named” Marceliano Echaves St.

In August 2002, the City Council passed the ordinance renaming the street after Albaño “to put things in their proper perspective, which in effect, supports the National Historical Insti-tute’s one-street-one-name policy.”

Last year, at least 98 residents of Barangay Maguikay signed a letter to the City Council, asking its members to give Albaño due recognition for his generosity in selling part of his property at a low price to give way to what is now the Maguikay Elementary School.

He was “one of the few” who served the municipal government of Mandaue after the Japanese occupation, the residents explained.
