NATIONAL MASTER Mario Mangubat and four other contenders ended round six jammed at the No.1 spot with five points apiece as competition scorched in the Class A of the 1st E-Sprint Software Chess Tournament at the E-Sprint office in Mandaue City.

Keeping his composure after getting derailed in the early rounds, Mangubat defeated Erwin Ababat in 44 moves of his pet French defense to nab his fifth win in the nine-rounder Swiss system clashes.

Also ending the second day of hostilities at the top post were Glen Pardillo and early-leader Calros Moreno III, who settled for a draw in their round six match in 48 moves of a Pirc defense.

Voltaire Sevillano, meanwhile, seized his fifth point after thumping another early leader, Anthony Makinano, in 43 moves of a King’s Indian Defense, while Francisco Abugho Jr. snatched his piece of the pole post posting his fifth win by beating Ramsy Pedrosa in 37 decisive turns of his Queen’s Pawn opening.

Three woodpushers, on the other hand, share the second spot, all with 4.5 points starting with Rodrigo Alejandre, who toppled Doy Arcilla in 38 moves of French defense, to keep within striking distance.

Eden Diano also logged a similar 4.5 round-six score when he trounced Redentor Nailon in 35 moves of a Sicilian defense, while Isen Montero grabbed his share of the three-way dead heat after pounding Diomedes Diano in 34 moves of the Reti opening.

The tourney will resume on Friday with the final three rounds of the Class B (students’ division) from 1-5 p.m. at the E-sprint Software Office on Sacris Road, Mandaue City.

The final three rounds of Class A will be on Saturday from 1-5 p.m. also at the E-sprint Software Office.

The top four finishers will advance to the semifinals at the Ayala Activity Center.

The winners in the knockout-format semis will advance to the one-game championship.

Champion in Class A will get a cash purse of P10,000, while the top player in Class B will get P5,000.

The second to the third placers will also get cash prizes.
